Mark Andrew arrived back at the house in time for breakfast. Lucio sat looking at him darkly and he wondered why. What had he done now? Merry had not come down. Champlain looked groggy and von Hetz looked the way he always did, dark and contemplative. John Paul sat next to his Master and smiled at Mark Andrew every time he looked up. It was disconcerting to say the least. He wondered where the clurichaun was. They finished the meal and von Hetz said the prayers.
Michele brought them hot coffee and all this occurred before a single word was spoken. She glanced at them accusingly as she filled their cups, as if she thought their rule about not speaking and not drinking during meals was about as silly as things could get.
âSo where did you get off to so early?â Lucio was the first to break the silence.
âMrs. McCreary came by,â he said. âShe had a bit of trouble.â He glanced at Michele. âShe was looking for John Paul, but I didnât want to wake anyone.â
âWhat was it this time?â Michele asked as she took a seat at the table and glanced at John Paul whose smile had turned upside-down at the mention of Joan McCreary.
âShe had⦠her husband had run their car into the ditch,â he explained. âDown the road a bit. He was drunk. I took them home. It was no problem.â
âIt was a problem,â Michele said quietly and looked down at the table. âIâm sorry you had to do that. You should have woke us up. She is our problem, not yours.â
âIt was nothing,â Mark insisted, yawned and looked away from her.
âSo you met her husband?â Michele asked him after a moment.
âNot exactly,â he hedged and wished he had not told them anything. The last thing he wanted was a long conversation. âHe was passed out. He never woke up.â
âYou mean you had to carry him inside his house?â Michele was shocked.
âYes,â Mark nodded. âIt was nothing.â
âBut they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment,â John Paul spoke up and their conversation faltered as they turned their attention to the priest. âAnd thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee a barber's razor, and cause it to pass upon thine head. Thou shalt also take thereof a few in number, and bind them in thy skirts. Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. Thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck.â
Mark Andrew sat with his mouth slightly open listening to his son. Only the very last line made any sense to him.
